The gushing waterfall that flows through the heart of Bicholim taluka is the Harvalem waterfall. Wrapped in nature, the waterfall is situated in North Goa roughly two kilometers from Sanquelim. The waterfall with a height of fifty meters and seven meters width is one of the famous tourist destinations offering a calm and picturesque view to the visitors unlike the crowded beaches of Goa.

Where History Meets Spirituality

The area is steeped in history which is evident from the historic Shree Rudreshwar Temple, situated right at the footsteps of the cascading waters. The temple bells and the swooshing sound of the waterfalls offer a perfect rhythmic synchronization. A government- built concrete viewing bridge allows the visitors to enjoy the direct splashes of water. Other initiatives like building of a recreational park for the children by the government can also be seen.

The waterfall along with the temple is considered to be one of the sacred places in Goa for performing the rituals for the departed ancestors. The occasion of Mahashivratri brings marvelous celebrations to the place with devotees offering their worship to Lord Shiva.

The Mystery of the Arvalem Caves

A short five-minute walk from the waterfall leads to the Arvalem caves, representing the rich Indian history. Carved out of a single laterite hill back in the 6th century AD, these rock-cut chambers are wrapped in mystery. Local folklore fondly refers to them as the Pandava Caves, claiming that the legendary brothers from the Mahabharata sought refuge here during their exile.

Monsoons and Local Flavors

July to September is considered the best time to visit the place, as the monsoon adds to the majestic experience of enjoying the waterfall. At the foot of the falls one may find locals selling hot corn as a snack to the visitors. Besides the cascades, the place also serves as a convenient birdwatching and photography spot.

Preserving Nature’s True Identity

Rooted in deep culture and traditions, the locals of the village can be seen engaged in local businesses earning a good income. The village itself serves as a placid place wrapped in nature. However, despite its beauty, Harvalem waterfall has witnessed severe environmental pollution over a period of time. One of the major reasons is irresponsible behaviour showcased by tourists; for instance, polluting the area with plastics and other eatables, reckless swimming during monsoons and many more. Hence it is the need of the hour to realize the responsibility of preserving nature without hindering its true identity. Harvalem waterfall serves as the placid spot of Goa that feels like the nature’s soul accompanied by the spirituality and history making it a must place to visit and experience the same.
