Located in Tivim village of Bardez taluka, stands the beautiful St. Christopher Church inviting the devotees and visitors to explore the historic landmark of Portuguese-Goa. Known as Sao Cristovao Igreja em Tivim, Goa in Portuguese, it is also known as ‘Tivim church’ locally. Built in 1623, the church was built by the villagers of Tivim, Sirsaim and Assonora and is dedicated to St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers.

The Franciscan Rectorate of Tivim was founded in 1636, under the patronage of St. Christopher, the martyr. During the Maratha invasion of Goa in 1683, the Tivim church was burnt down and damaged. However, it was rebuilt within two years. Since 1766, the Tivim church has been looked after by the Diocesan clergy, continuing its religious and historic legacy.

The church stands as the finest example of Portuguese architecture. Before entering the church, at the entrance, stands the statue of the saint carrying the child Jesus, a symbol of prayer for all on their journeys. The legend of Tivim church suggests that the patron saint was celebrated for carrying people across the river with only one staff in his hand. One stormy night he carried a child on his shoulders, whose weight seemed to increase with each step he took. The infant revealed himself to be Jesus. The man’s kindness was rewarded by the transformation of his staff into a tree, and he was renamed ‘Christopher’ or ‘Christ-bearer’. Other architectural features of the church include the bell tower, which is almost 100 feet tall. It also has a museum which was founded in 1998. The church also contains the ancient statues of St Michael, St Sebastian and St Thomas.

The church celebrates many events and festivals throughout the year. The feast of St. Christopher is one of the major events and is celebrated on the last Sunday of July. On the occasion of the feast, one can witness processions, a fair, and cultural events like dances and plays.
