Located on the hillock of Bicholim stands the old Muslim religious structure, the Namazgah. The monument serves as a heritage site for visitors to explore the history of Goa. The Namazgah is an open-air prayer area. The name can be seen as derived from the fusion of namaz (prayer) and Idgah (place of prayer). The site offers a look into Islamic architecture, which is evident from the structure of the monument. Locally known as Nimuzgoh, the site is considered one of the enjoyable tourist destinations to experience Goa beyond the beaches.

Built in 1683, the monument was built as an asylum for the Mughal prince Akbar II who retreated to the konkan region Following a failed rebellion against Emperor Aurangzeb, where he found refuge and a powerful ally in the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Together, their combined forces successfully fought off Portuguese colonial advancements in Goa. To celebrate their joint military victory, Sambhaji gifted the hilltop land to the prince for an open-air prayer space.

The first thing that one sees is the box-shaped pavilion with a dome. Because this monument functions as an Idgah (a spacious ground for mass prayer), the design prioritizes expansive, open-air floor space rather than an enclosed hall. One can also see the row of pillars surrounding the monument, with each pillar sculpted with a crescent moon at the top. At the front entrance, one may notice the open seating verandas, heritage researchers note these closely resemble the balcão, the classic porch seen in traditional Goan homes. For visitors, reaching there requires climbing 200 steps, making it a short adventure.

The site gives a panoramic view of the entire town from the top, allowing one to experience nature. The place is also perfect for bird-watching and photography, especially during the evening hours. A 30-minute distance from the place leads to the Dhabdhaba waterfall, allowing visitors to enjoy the splashes of fresh water during the monsoon.

The monument is officially protected under the Goa, Daman and Diu Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1978 and is cared for by the Directorate of Archaeology, Government of Goa. Every year, the gates of the monument are opened, allowing the Muslim community of Bicholim to perform congregational prayers during Eid, keeping its 340-year-old legacy alive.

In order to ensure a smooth visit, it is important for visitors to keep a few precautions in mind. For instance, since the climb is about 200 steps, wearing comfortable shoes can make the experience hassle-free. Secondly, the best time to arrive at the spot is between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM, with natural lighting that makes the open sky and monument look more beautiful and stand perfect for photography and bird-watching. It is also important to ensure that no litter is left behind on the hilltop.

The site of Namazgah in Bicholim stands as an epitome of Goan heritage, providing insights into history through its rich architectural elements. Situated on the hilltop, the place also offers a panoramic view of the surrounding villages and nature. Hidden in the taluka of Bicholim, the Namazgah remains unexplored by tourists.
